Preparedness is About Being Ready
When wildfire smoke billows on the horizon or the lights go out after an earthquake, the people who feel the calmest aren’t the ones with the most gear, they’re the ones who know exactly where all that gear is. A well-built emergency kit only works if it’s organized and ready to use at a moment’s notice.
As part of a preparedness collaboration between RUX, Adventure Medical Kits, LuminAID, SOL (Survive Outdoors Longer) and Buck Knives we built two systems designed for people who live in areas that may be affected by natural disaster.
Although emergency readiness has become part of modern life, many kits still end up failing because they’re hastily assembled in a cardboard box, then buried behind holiday decorations. The system often disappears until it’s needed most. By then the moisture has snuck in, the food has expired and the batteries are corroded. That’s the problem this preparedness collaboration solves.

Why Most Emergency Kits Fail
A preparedness kit should increase reaction times during stressful moments. Unfortunately, most setups add to the chaos. Common problems include:
- Supplies spread across multiple containers
- Water-damaged contents
- Dead batteries and expired food
- Poor portability during evacuations
- No system for organization
- Kits stored somewhere inaccessible
The reality is simple: if your kit isn’t easy to maintain and easy to move, it probably won’t work when you need it most. That’s why the structure of the system matters.
First off, the container has to withstand years of storage while keeping its contents dry. Secondly, it should be easy to carry, stack and organize. And ideally, it should integrate into everyday life rather than becoming another forgotten bin in the corner of the basement.

The Two-Kit Emergency System
For this preparedness collaboration, every piece of gear was selected with that philosophy in mind.
1. The Home Emergency Kit
The goal of a home emergency kit is simple: create a centralized system that can support your household for days after a disaster. Utilizing the RUX 70L with Press-Seal lid, this is the “set it and trust it” solution designed for long-term storage.
Inside the system:
- First aid and trauma supplies from Adventure Medical Kits
- Solar-powered lighting and charging solutions from LuminAID
- Emergency shelter and survival tools from SOL
- Selkirk knife with integrated fire starter flint and whistle from Buck Knives
- Food, water and household essentials based on the PreparedBC checklist
These items live inside the weatherproof and durable 70L RUX container, which is designed to survive years in a basement, shed or garage. After all, a preparedness kit isn’t useful if moisture destroys the batteries and mice chew through food packaging.
2. The Grab-and-Go Bag
Built around the RUX Bag 25L, which seamlessly nests within the 70L box to save space, this setup is optimized for mobility. It’s what you grab when the evacuation notice arrives.
A grab-and-go system should include:
- Lightweight emergency shelter
- Medical essentials
- Headlamps and lighting
- Phone charging capability
- Extra warm clothing
- Important documents
- Water and food
- Communication tools
It’s important to realize that portability changes things because weight becomes a factor when speed matters. The modular structure of the RUX system keeps critical gear organized and immediately accessible. Because when smoke moves down the valley, and an evacuation occurs, it’s dangerous to waste time dumping whatever supplies are at hand into a black trash bag.

Emergency Preparedness FAQ
How often should I update my emergency kit?
A good rule is to check your kit every six months. Replace expired food, rotate batteries and update medications or important documents.
What’s the difference between a home kit and a grab-and-go bag?
A home kit supports longer-term shelter-in-place situations. A grab-and-go bag is optimized for fast evacuation and usually contains essentials for roughly 72 hours.
Why does the container matter so much?
Moisture and critters can destroy emergency kits quickly. A durable, weatherproof storage system that provides excellent organization helps protect supplies and makes them easier to access quickly.
Where should I store an emergency kit?
Store your home kit somewhere accessible year-round, like a garage, mudroom, basement or utility space. Your grab-and-go bag should be easy to reach immediately.
What’s the biggest preparedness mistake people make?
Waiting too long to organize supplies. A lot of people buy the right gear, but never consolidate it into a reliable system.

Preparedness Has Come A Long Way
Wildfires, floods, heatwaves and other climate-related disruptions have changed the conversation around emergency kits. Events that once felt rare now feel increasingly common. As a result, preparedness has become more practical.
If you haven’t already, it’s time to build a reliable system that buys time, reduces panic and allows you to make better decisions when your surroundings become unstable. Because when conditions change quickly, preparedness becomes less about survival gear and more about knowing your essentials are protected, organized and ready to move when you are.
