RUX Receives Its First Patent: Why That Matters

Every patent starts with a problem worth solving. For us, that meant building a better gear storage solution designed to solve the compromise between bulky hard bins and shapeless soft bags.

After six years of prototyping, testing and refinement, we just earned our first patent. Now, the engineering behind the modular system we designed to make organizing, transporting and storing gear simpler is fully protected.

But, unfortunately, patents have a reputation issue. Many people associate them with giant corporations, expensive legal teams and drawn-out disputes. They seem like something reserved for companies with entire departments dedicated to protecting intellectual property, not a small company like us, who are focused on creating a new product that is genuinely different.

The Product Came First, Not the Paperwork

The RUX patent was never the starting point. It was the result of solving a design challenge in enough detail that it became worth protecting.

The system behind our original 70L Gear Box was built around a few key ideas: create structure, save space with continuous compression and give users the ability to adapt the system for their own needs.

What the Patent Protects

The RUX patent covers the core design elements that differentiate our products from traditional storage solutions. These include:

  • Collapsible Structure: Spring steel corner stays give the 70L and 40L Gear Boxes their shape and stability when deployed, then flex inward to allow the boxes to collapse flat. Unlike other collapsible storage solutions that require removing panels or support components, the RUX system compresses continuously without needing to rearrange the box's contents or remove structural elements.
  • Utility Rail System: Our Utility Rail is the foundation of the RUX modular ecosystem. Integrated into the Gear Box, the rails create attachment points for straps, handles and smaller storage components, allowing users to configure their setup based on how they carry and organize their gear. The rail system also extends beyond our storage products. Standalone Utility Rails can be installed in garages, vehicles and other places to create a consistent way of organizing equipment, wherever it lives.
  • Modular Design: The RUX system was designed to grow over time. Instead of creating single-purpose containers and bags, we built a platform that can evolve to accommodate new accessories and applications, encouraging users to swap lids, pockets, dividers and other components across the product ecosystem.

Why Patents Are Important

For a small, design-led company, developing a new product involves years of prototyping and testing. A patent protects that work and the specific mechanisms behind the product, creating a foundation for continued innovation.

Just as importantly, it signals that RUX products have meaningful technical differentiation in an increasingly crowded category. As more brands introduce portable gear storage products, protecting the innovations that allowed us to pioneer this space is necessary.

The Honest Tradeoff

Patents are not simple. The process takes time, costs money and requires a company to make a long-term commitment before knowing exactly where the protection will lead.

For us, the decision came down to whether the underlying invention was genuinely new. RUX doesn't pursue patents for every idea. We focus on protecting the solutions that come from meaningful design work and engineering.

Ensuring that we continue investing in R&D for the long run is why we started RUX in the first place. After all, our goal is to continue building products that solve real problems.
