Jeremy Grant is an award winning adventure filmmaker with a list of accolades longer than we can count. Between work and leisure, he knows a thing or two about truck camping. We sat down with him (and his family) and chatted with him about his Scout Camper, life on the road, and his top camp spots…
This summer we camped 37 nights and 17 different locations with 3 kids, 2 grown up and 1 old dog (16 years old to be exact but who’s counting).
As an adventure filmmaker, I’m travelling like crazy worldwide, from the North Pole to the Himalayas, but I realized I was having all my adventures without my family. When I’d come home to Nelson, BC to my wife and 3 kids it would be school, soccer practice, screens, repeat. I wanted to take the same sense of spontaneity and unknown from my film trips to camping with the family, but we’re a family of 5 so it felt like a big trailer was the only option until I found the Scout Kenia with it’s rooftop tent. After the first trip we realized how chaotic it is packing for 3 kids so got some RUX Bags to tighten our scene, and hit the road. Every time I flew back from a film shoot I’d load the camper that night we’d take off for somewhere, anywhere.
We hit Duncan Lake, Silverwood Amusement Park, Kokanee Camp Ground, Syringa, Fernie, Drumheller, Golden, Mt. Abriel, Argenta, Proctor, Crawford Bay, Kimberly, MacDonald Creek, Davis Creek, Revelstoke, Halfway Hotsprings and the side of the road because the border was closed for the night on our way home from a Shaina Twain concert (my wife's choice, and if you’re wondering, yes Shaina still has it.)
With that many adventures, it only felt fair to interview all 3 kids on our summer shenanigans.
What is your favourite part of the Scout Camper?
Ferris (Age 12): Going to soccer torments and making pasta for the whole team at lunch in the Camper.
Nixyn (age 10): Sleeping in the rooftop tent. I like the view… and sneaking snacks up there… and leaving the wrappers up there for Dad to clean up.
Bennit (Age 5): Turning my bed into a table so we can play Spot It! and I can beat my dad.
What was your favourite camping trip this summer?
Ferris: Silverwood amusement park. Because we could go on all the riders and still come back to our Scout for hot dogs at lunch, we use our RUX to bring our bathing suits too so we can go to the water park whenever we want.
Nixyn: Revelstoke, because we got to ride the pipe mountain coaster and eat ice cream… and the cookies…and pie.
Bennit: Drumheller, we got to see the dinosaurs and even go in a T-Rex’s mouth, and hiking in the hoodoos (note from Dad: by hiking he means me carrying him on my shoulders in the desert heat while he complains that I’m too sweaty.)
