At RUX, we can all appreciate a classic Toyota Truck! We touch base with Sam in Revelstoke B.C. Who uses his well taken care of truck for ski, dirt-bike and mountain bike missions. We certainly think the RUX helps keep his gear extra tight in his bed while bombing those logging roads.
Tell us a bit about yourself? Where do you live? What makes you happiest?
I am a third generation Revelstoke local born and raised. Grew up in the mountains skiing, riding mountain bikes, dirtbikes, trail building and 4x4 wheeling. Graduated from high school this year and went right into a hectic first season as a BCWS wildfire fighter, but whenever I was back from deployments you could find me either on the trails with my toys or at my buddies house wrenching on whichever of my toys broke first, trying to get back to doing what makes me happy.
Describe your vehicle: make, model, etc.
1990 SR5 Toyota Extra Cab Pickup v6 stick shift, with chevy rear suspension and early 80’s toyota solid axle front 4x4 suspension sitting on 35in tires.
What's the favourite feature of your vehicle?
Having a solid front axle is a game changer for off-roading, as well as the clearance for large 35inch tires. Would be lying if I said the paint job wasn’t favourite part as well.
Best location/adventure you've ever had with your vehicle?
4x4ing up high in the alpine on Silvercup Ridge overlooking Trout Lake and the Badshot mountain range. Driving up on old mining roads that have not been maintained in 100’s of years is an adventure but the views and history up on that ridge is un-matched.
Most epic stuck/breakdown/wrong turn?
Probably the Hairiest situation i’ve gotten in yet actually had to be driving the truck home after I first bought it. 350km drive home at night after buying it, with no 5th gear, the worst toed out alignment i’ve ever seen along with some super sketchy shims in the front end that made the truck walk all over the road. Was at the point where I phoned my boss mid drive to say I wasn’t sure if I would make it to work the next day, but sure enough I made it home and got right to work removing the shims and doing a redneck alignment along with other mods.
Any advice to someone thinking of getting into a custom adventure vehicle?
Anything Toyota will do you well.
